The Ministry of Culture carries a museum policy throughout France, to guarantee access to public collections to the greatest number. With more than 1200 museums benefiting from the «Musée de France» designation, museums are among the most present cultural institutions in the territory.
Within the Ministry of Culture, the museum service of France The Directorate-General for Heritage and Architecture is responsible for defining and coordinating State policy on heritage and collections.

"Museums of France" in all territories
Museums with the name «Musée de France» are distributed in all regions and receive priority support from the State. The Department has scientific and technical control over museum collections management. They advise them in their architectural and museum projects within the framework of the Heritage Code which gives meaning to the name «Musée de France».
Museums accessible to all
Priority to arts and cultural education, free on the first Sunday of the month, Museum night—measures to increase and diversify public attendance. The same applies to the labeling of exhibitions of national interest or the echo given in heritage places to the major societal issues.

Preserve and enrich public collections
Guaranteeing the conservation and protection of public collections, which have the status of national treasures, is at the heart of the action of the State services. They also oversee the enrichment, circulation and dissemination of the collections, while the inventory and the regular proofing allow to better know them.
Networking professionals
The museums of France rely on a network of professionals and institutions acting together for the same policy. Gathered in associations supported by the Ministry, museum professionals (curators, stewards, restaurateurs...) and institutions (ecomuseums, writers houses...) contribute to animate this network by sharing best practices and feedback.
