Parks and Gardens
As buildings, parks and gardens of historical, artistic or architectural interest may benefit from protection under the Heritage Code (Book VI, Titles I and II). There are two levels of protection: classification or inscription, classification being the highest level of protection.

LABELS AND LABELLING
In France, there are several labels for parks and gardens:
- the "Remarkable Garden" label, awarded by the Ministry of Culture;
- the "Parcs et Jardins de France" label, awarded by the French Federation of Parks and Gardens;
- the label «Remarkable Trees», awarded by the association A.R.B.R.E.S (Remarkable Trees, Assessment, Research, Studies and Safeguarding);
- the label «Jardin de Noé», awarded by the association Noé Conservation.
These different labels make it possible to promote parks and gardens and make them known to the public.
THE LABEL «REMARKABLE GARDEN»
This label, established in 2004, is awarded by the Ministry of Culture. It aims to highlight gardens of remarkable cultural, aesthetic, historical or botanical interest.
It is awarded for a period of 5 years. A regional working group of various experts examines first-time applicants and applications for renewal of the label.
OBTAIN THE LABEL
To obtain this label, the garden must meet a number of criteria that relate to different aspects, such as aesthetic quality, botanical interest, cultural and historical interest, maintenance of the garden, openness and reception of the public.
The owner of the garden must prepare an application file that presents the garden and justifies its application to the label. The file is then reviewed by the regional working group appointed for 5 years by the prefect of the Region.
